(06 Oct. 86) I had bicycle patrol in the downtown area from 9th Street to 6th Street. The day was uneventful and I managed to get some exercise pedaling around the zone.

At 2130 hours I received a call from the station to meet the sergeant and one of our investigators at the Reef Bachelor Quarters. The Reef is on 6th Street across from the Yuk Club and houses male and female workers.

We met at the west end of the building and I was told that a couple living on the second floor had some marijuana hidden on the premises, according to a tip. My job was to position myself on the stairs at the end of the hall and observe the room until a search warrant could be obtained. I did this for 30 minutes while residents of the building came and went. I think by the time the drug dog and his handler arrived, everyone knew something was up. Buck, a big red irish Setter (No one could tell me what breed he was) came through the hall door, his leash tight. Buck is an animal in perpetual motion, checking everything out while copious amounts of saliva drip onto whatever lies beneath him. Buck looks like an Odie to me.

We came to the room in question and Buck became excited. He moved back and forth, then placed his front paws on the wall and began to scratch. Meanwhile, neighbors all along the hall opened their doors a little to follow the action.

The sergeant knocked on the door loudly and about thirty seconds later a young woman wearing shorts answered the door. I see her quite often at the PDR, always wearing shorts. She’s over six feet tall and really does stand out in a crowd.

Buck started barking and I heard a cat meow. The woman picked up her cat and gave it to a neighbor at the sergeant’s request.

The sergeant read the search warrant and she invited us in. She went over to a table where her boyfriend and another couple were playing cards, They all sat quietly while we searched the apartment. Buck was into everything and finally settled on a stereo system that stood about five feet high in a corner of the room.

I wondered if Buck had hit on the cat’s scent. The sergeant decided not to take the stereo apart even though that was the only place Buck showed any interest. And Buck really knows his job.

We ended up leaving very quietly with the exception of a “sorry to bother you,” from the sergeant.
