(18 Nov 86) I returned to Gellinam but this time the clouds were gone The tradewinds were weak and the sun intense. No workers were on the island and with water all around us, I felt a bit lonely and just a bit sad. It’s easier to confront your life on an island like this, without the distractions that civilization offers. But I’ve been there and this is much better than the futility of the rat race.

1500 – I sat on the boulders out on the shore again and observed the reef below my position. A family of four eels slithered back and forth between two rocks, finally hiding beneath a flat stone to my right. Occasionally an eel would poke its head out and stare at me.

Colorful little tropical fish, about two inches in length, swam by the rock but the eels were not interested. They either were not hungry or had a preference for something else. And since it’s been a slow day I’ll take this time to mention this item of importance to a number of people on the atoll.

1600 – I guess this next topic could be called ”Island Lust” or “Looking for Love in All the Wrong Places.” There are about 5,000 people on Kwajalein Island and the ratio of men to women is 35 to 1. So females have the advantage. Ordinary looking women who are 60 pounds overweight are treated like Miss Universe. And the women take advantage of this, including married women with children.

We have one woman on the police force who goes to the  outer islands, along with a constable. There is also one female constable on the force who goes to the outer islands with a police officer. Whenever possible, the female constable tries to go with the female police officer. But that doesn’t happen too often because the male officers want to be with the female Marshallese constable. I should mention Lei (not her real name) has long lustrous hair, a beautiful face and a nice petite body.

So this beautiful young woman, who is on a deserted island with officer (fill in any name), who is filled with nervous energy and a plan, makes small talk, flirting with Lei and hinting that maybe they could get together. We’ve got a nice bed and no one else is around. A shame to waste it. But the end result is , “Sorry Charlie. I’ve got to get some sleep.”

She finally asked to transfer to the position of office secretary when one officer got down on his knees beside her bed as she lay sleeping and begged her for a little compassion, a little relief.

Now the female officer, Sheila, is just the opposite. She’s about five – ten, blond hair, nice build but doesn’t work out that much. But perfect for an evening on an outer island. Sheila goes to the islands accompanied by Marshallese constables who are generally much shorter than she is. She also has an American boyfriend back on Kwaj and the islanders don’t match up.

This story came from a constable who spent 24 hours on Omelek with Sheila. The constable (name withheld) was talking on the phone in the trailer and she came into the room wearing a bikini. The constable feels like he’s going to faint. She told the constable, “I’m going out to the lawn chair and get some sun.  I’m going to take my top off and I don’t want you looking out the window.” Well, the constable looked out the window and the story goes that she took everything off.  I don’t know if it happened but the story is plausible.

I had my first encounter with the civic-minded ladies of Kwaj. I was looking to buy some local items for souveniers and I stopped at a concession staffed with the housewifes of American workers. One of the ladies came up to me and put her arm around me and asked if I wanted to see an adult movie at a get together in the family housing section. Another lady gave me the name of the movie and asked if I had seen it. I said no. She said there will be other things to do, smiling. She gave me the meeting schedule. I said thanks but I’m already booked up.

A sergeant told me that he attended one of those get togethers and he described it in graphic details. I’ll pass on this offer. Also, it’s a good way to lose your job.

Even the minors are involved. I previously mentioned that a 15-year old girl had “saved” a large sum of money in one year at Kwaj “dating” island workers. Just a typical small town in America.
