(10 Feb. 87) A lot of work is taking place the entire length of Illeginni. Surveyors have already marked off places with red paint. Probably targets for another batch of incoming RVs in a few days. Brand X and a few other vessels should be offshore soon. I heard that the center of the round concrete water containment structure is one target. It’s located directly across from the generator building for the island.
Two mobile radar dishes are being placed atop the launch hill on the island’s southern tip. Other work is progressing in the center of Illeginni amid the scarred buildings of the former workers’ camp.
1300 - Catching up on my notes:
I made it back to Carlos a few days ago and this time I brought my basketball and headed for the basketball court near the south village but no kids were around. Then Tristin, one of the boys I met a couple of weeks ago, called my name and came over.
I asked him where everyone was and he said the boat had taken them to Ebeye to attend school. They will stay with relatives during the week and return to Carlos on the weekend. Tristin said he couldn’t go because they kicked him off the boat for fighting.
A few hours later some of the younger children joined me while I took some practice shots. One short fellow with a runny nose, named Wojak, dribbled the ball with great skill. He shot the ball well but, being just a couple of feet taller than the ball, he couldn’t reach the ten foot level of the rim. About another four feet or so. He came out later in the day after dinner and put forth a lot of energy trying to impress me with his skills. For his size he did quite well. I decided to give him my basketball so he could practice everyday. He looked surprised but held the ball tightly as he walked toward his home. After about thirty yards he turned to see if I would call him back. I waved and started back to the security building. He waved, then turned and continued on, still holding the ball firmly in both arms.
