Facebook wants to be more than a place to socialize, share, and discover content. It wants you to shop inside it as well. Google is introducing a way for shoppers browsing on their smartphones to buy merchandise by tapping on a button included in the ads appearing in its search results.

Today, Facebook made a pretty clear statement that Pages is shifting to become a major priority for them in terms of user traffic. imacninja.com BuzzFeed reported that the company had recently started testing shops with ‘buy buttons’ inside of Facebook Pages.

Facebook is testing digital stores with a ‘buy’ button for Pages:

“With the shop section on the page, we’re now providing businesses with the ability to showcase their products directly on this page,” Facebook product marketing manager Emma Rodgers says. If it works, bringing storefronts directly to Facebook Pages could have a transformative effect on online commerce, as retailers embrace the platform not just to inform their customers, but to sell directly to them.

This change has major potential to shift how users interact with businesses, Facebook is already completely altering how users discover posts from pages that they follow. Facebook is joining several other social media giants, including Pinterest and Twitter, that are shifting to tackle commerce.

The company’s move towards surging eCommerce makes sense. Currently, most of Facebook’s revenue comes from digital advertisements. The digital advertising market is predicted to reach $60 billion in 2015 while on the other hand, the eCommerce market is estimated to reach $350 billion in 2015.

It’s not clear when the ‘shops’ feature may roll out; it’s still in the testing phase. Facebook currently has a few partners it’s working with but is mum about who its launch partners will be. Cross your fingers that your favorite store or brand is on-board.
